Excerpt from Dr Anne Bondi’s Saddle Fitting Webinar
On April 26 2021 Dr Anne Bondi, Director of the SRT, presented a highly informative webinar on the topic of Evaluating English Saddle Fit. The presentation was based on Dr Bondi’s academic paper, ”Evaluating the suitability of an English saddle for a horse and rider combination”, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Equine Veterinary Education in 2019, and was co-authored by Dr Sue Dyson together with Sue Norton and Laurence Pearman from the Society of Master Saddlers. This evidence-based, comprehensive paper describes an in-depth, systematic protocol for the evaluation of the saddle, the horse and the rider. The protocol includes evaluation of: • Conformation • Functional design of the saddle, including the tree and panel • Use of accessories such as pads and girths • Ridden assessment. This short video busts the myth about saddles evenly distributing weight on to the horse’s back.
